A little help from my friends...

You know what the worst month in the history of all the months is?

You may want to immediately jump to December because of all the holiday stress, but you'd be wrong. Because at least at the end of December, you have some fun new gifts and a darling baby savior sent for your eternal salvation. So, nope. Not December.

The absolute worst month ...

MAY IS THE WORST.

End of school madness.
Teacher gifts.
Sports that never want to end.
Awards.
Graduations.
Kids still insist on eating lunch.

Oh, and you have to somehow be a functioning adult through all of it.

I'm still recovering.

But you know what helped me tremendously this year?

Thanks to Shelly and her amazing #momsrockmaystyle challenge... I didn't have to think about what I was going to wear.

This was kind of out of my comfort zone...but it was totally worth it. I wore things that have just been hanging in my closet for way too long. I tried new combos. I even fixed my hair more often (ha!).

So, Shelly... thanks for being amazing. Thanks for sharing your talents and style tips with us. Thanks for empowering women. YOU rock every single day!

Blogger Scarf Exchange...

I was perusing Insta one day and got a notification that someone had commented on a picture. Turns out Shelly was telling me and Holly to sign up for a blogger scarf exchange hosted by the lovely Vanessa and it took me .2 seconds to say yes!

About two weeks later I got a fun package in the mail... i

And instantly tried the softest, coziest, most fun Aggie plaid scarf on!

I mean how darling is this?

The following week was perfect scarf weather - so I paired it with my new favorite maroon dress, a denim button down and olive booties.

Two-day curls AND scarf weather?!?! All the hallelujahs!

I had the pleasure of shopping for Deena and went to my favorite place, Giddy Up Glamour. I wanted to find something that wasn't at most stores and got the most darling aqua scarf with feathers (pictures, not actual feathers) on it. I really wanted to keep it for myself - that's how cute it was. You'll have to trust me, because I didn't take a picture before I emailed it!

This was my first exchange and I'm already looking forward to next year!!

Show and Tell: My tribe

I love today's topic with Andrea - mainly because I think I hit the jackpot when it comes to tribes.

I am so grateful for the women in my life. My first true loves. Nothing can replace or take away from Ryan and what he means to me and how he fulfills my life... but nothing can replace or take away these ladies either. I have been given such a treasure in the women in my life. I love them so fiercly that it's scary.

I would walk through fire, swim through freezing cold water, eat a bug, or fight a giant for any one of them and they would do the same for me. The beauty of our friendship is the grace in which we love each other. We all mess up. We all make stupid stupid choices and we are not afraid to love each other through it.

I was given two brothers by birth... but God decided that I needed a sister, too. I met Jenni in kindergarten but we became besties in the first grade. We were both in Mrs. Sadler's class (seriously the best teacher ever) and pretty much from that year on, we were inseparable. We took cheerleading and dance together. We had sleepovers. We shared secrets. We played dress up. We lived life in pure bliss. 30 years of loving someone and being loved in return is more than a person could even begin to ask for. I could write an entire series of books on all that we have done, seen, heard and lived. Boyfriends and breakups, junior high angst, high school drama... love and marriage, death and babies... we have done this all together. Side by side. Through prayer and patience - she has loved me. She keeps it real. Annoys me with her goodness and grace, keeps me honest, keeps me sane, and makes me whole.

As time went on our friendship just grew. And soon after, our Moms became best friends, too (because they basically had no other choice). How awesome is that? My best-friend's mom is my mom's best friend.  For 30 years, they set an example to us what it really means to be a friend - there is no greater gift than that. We lost Dee almost three years ago and not a day goes by that my mom doesn't miss her friend. I love their friendship. They took such great care of each other, made each other laugh. Loved and fought just like sisters. They celebrated each other through the good and supported each other through the tough.

Dee, Mom, Me and Jenni  on my wedding day!

Lyndee and Charis complete my childhood crew. They are the friends every girl needs in her army of women. Fierce. Funny. Freaking awesome at fixing hair and makeup. Honest. Strong. And they will defend the heck out of you - even if they don't know the whole story. They don't need to, because they are on your team. They are your family. They have your back even if you don't ask them. They love. They laugh. They complete the foursome. A foursome I miss. A foursome I pray to be reunited and rekindled. A foursome that can't be broken by time, by distance, by mistakes or misunderstandings. We four are the Ra Ras... and if you would believe it... we even have a creed:

We stand by each other through thick and thin
We support each other our forever friends
We love each other in good times and bad
We say “you look skinny” to make you glad
We toast to successes and failures, too
We celebrate our friendship in all that we do
We laugh and we cry through hellos and goodbyes
We live for the moment whatever that may be
The Ra Ras forever, the Ra Ras are we!

And just when I thought God couldn't give any more... that I didn't deserve anymore... he had another set of women waiting for me, in my home that was yet-to-be. Because, at 17 I had no idea that this little ol' town of College Station would stick. That I would stay. That I would even need more women to make me whole.

But He did.

One random fall day in 1999, when my roomies and I were having a small(ish) Saturday night "prayer meeting" (ehm)... I was introduced to one of my roommates girlfriends. We were anxious to meet this "Cindy" person that Josh had been spending so much time with. Never in a million years would I have guessed that I would eventually spend half of my life with her, too. Ha! (She likes to say that I was mean to her, but I contend that I was just being protective of my basic 3rd brother.)

The years went by, we survived graduate school, weddings, first babies, work, deaths, second babies, third babies, more work, more death and everything in between. We have let our guard down, sometimes put fences up, been brave, been vulnerable, been hateful, but forgiven. She answers my phone calls, replies to my texts instantly, loves my kids, and reminds me that being a friend is as simple as responding with "how can I help". She reminds me that it's not that hard to love someone. To help someone. To be brave for someone.

We have managed to create a village because He knew we needed one. And yet again, he brought me women. Women that love and laugh. That cry and pray. That yell and cuss. And defend and support.

These women are my day to day. My people that live life next to me. They are not replacement friends. Because NONE of my friends are replaceable. These women challenge me in my work. Support me in motherhood.  Jenna calms me down, Krista makes me think, Jennifer lets me cry.

And y'all. If that wasn't enough, because MERCY, how could that not be ENOUGH? He gave me more. Shelly and Holly were women behind a screen that, turns out, lived right here. Holly lives less than a mile away from my house. In a crazy twist of fate, we met in real life, exchanged phone numbers and they have become women that I turn to for advice, for laughs, for help, for inappropriate jokes... for whatever life throws at me. They accepted ME into their sacred circle of friendship and I am better for it.  These women show up in big and small ways. They reminded me that friendship is worth taking the time for. They don't just say, "let's grab a drink" they make sure it happens. And - they bring me wine, which is clearly the signs of a true friendship because what else do you need when your husband is gone four nights a week and you are responsible for the care of your children than alcohol? They welcome all parts of me in - the good, the bad, the cray cray... and they love me for it. We've known each other a year, but we've got a lifetime to go.

And to think of all the threads of the quilt that makes up my entire story of friendship? Oh my gosh - I can't even begin. Niki is my let's get shit done girl - my across the states neighbor and friend - my buddy and partner in crime. Amber understands the long hours. Jen and I share the same non-existent sleeping habits. Susan is my soul sister in every true meaning of the word.  Jenn is my long-distance sister wife. Stephanie is my excuse to have a little sister to boss around because I clearly know better. They are beautiful. They are strong. They are brilliant.

They are the women I pray for when I close my eyes.

They are the women that I hope my daughters think of when choosing friends of their own.

They are the women that I carry in my heart.

They are who I want to make proud.

They make me love stronger, feel deeper, and pray harder each and every day of my life.

They are my answered prayers.

They are my girlfriends.

They are my tribe.

And to quote my friend, Mel, Nobody's Cuter than Them.

Let's Talk: Red, White, Blue

Leave it to me to forget until my early morning blog browse that today was a super fun link-up with Andrea and Erika that is ALL about the red, white and blue. I made to Shelly's bright and early and then did a face palm because

1. I forgot about the post and
2. I HAD NOT PUT ONE SINGLE decoration out for the summer yet.

I know, right? I mean, how can I even call myself a blogger/American with no July 4 decorations?

#haveImentionedthatIamdramatic

All kidding aside, I love sprucing up two spots in our house - the front porch and our mantle. So, I put on my big girl pants, struggled to open the attic door and got to decorating.

I purchased this bench for $14.99 at Walmart in 1999. I'm not sure I'd trust it enough to actually sit on it, but it has made the perfect little decoration spot in our front flower bed since I brought it home. I just draped a bunting on it from HobLob for the summer and it couldn't be cuter.

(Now if I could just work on those gardening skills).

The porch still looks a little bare - I couldn't cary the coke cooler down from the attic without dropping it, but once that's down this space will be ready for summer. In the meantime, I hung this darling yoyo bunting flag that I got me and my momma at Cracker Barrel years ago.

I die at the cuteness. Anyone know how to make these? Or want to learn? Or want to teach me?

And then I set out some stacked star dishes, a chalkboard and a tacky Uncle Sam nutcracker.

I moved inside and just set up a few things in the kitchen. You really can't go wrong with just stocking up on mini-flags.

And while this technically isn't red/white/blue, it does contain some American things, like a Junior's cookbook...

and a waltermelon candle counts, right?

and clearly the best part of this union of ours...

;)

I finished by setting up my favorite spot in the house. I loved the way our mantle turned out last year so I cheated a bit and just recreated the same look.

I was able to find some baseballs and I loved how sweet it turned out.

So, there you have it! A bit of red, white and blue totally brightened up my day and now I feel officially ready for the season!

Don't forget to head back tomorrow as me and Shelly Spiel the Beans over our favorite summer salads! Can't wait to add some great recipes to my list!

Show and Tell: What's in your bag

I am so excited for the random amounts of awesome that we are going to see from everyone's bag today. That random receipt, a lone marshmallow, hair ties... what awaits us?! Andrea has the best prompts for getting us to share, huh?

So here goes... this is what was in my bag yesterday...

She was packed to the brim - she looks like this lots. So if you are looking for a fun, useful, durable bag I would recommend this one! My brother bought it for me three Christmases ago and it's held up SO well!!!

So, what was inside...

1. ARC Customizable Notebook - Cindy introduced this item to me three years ago and it is the BEST! I also have the To Do list pages,  Project Planner pages, Dividers, Pocket folders and expansion discs.

I've also made my own to do sheets and calendar inserts that I was able to add after I purchased the hole punch. I should write an entire blog post on how I use this thing because it's amazing!!! You can take the sheets of paper in and out of the binder because the holes aren't closed. Gah - everyone needs this thing!

2. Laptop - because I am nothing if not a multi-tasker.
3. Random assortment of pens
4. Wallet (and as a bonus, it has cash in it!)
5. More notebooks - I am a paper girl. These two notebooks are my running list of items. I have added my own tabs like "shopping", "money", "goals", "travel", "blog" etc... so when I have an idea I have a space to write it all down.
6. Best pens ever. (Ummm...I only have the 10 pack - I may need the 20.)
7. Half-eaten bag of peanut m&ms that I snuck into the movies last night
8. More chapstick and lip gloss than is necessary
9. Lara Bar to make up for the M&Ms ;)

I also discovered this adorable bracelet that does not belong to my girls. Anyone missing this??

Oh and we all have the black hole of crap, right...

The interior pocket that includes, lady products, hair bands, lotion, lint, ear buds, kleenex (new & used), EOS lip balm, and gum wrappers.

Just keeping it real...

And that's what is in my bag! Can't wait to see yours.

Kids Behind the Blog: May

I am in NYC for a couple of days so I PLANNED AHEAD and got these answers on our way to Hunstville on Sunday.

 #profoblogger #itmaysnowinTexas #neverhappenagain

Landry was in a MOOD, which is so typical of her. She really does things when she is good and ready and I've just learned to accept it. No sense in trying to make her do anything (unless it's necessary like taking a bath, being polite, etc...). She quickly fell asleep and I had to catch this on film...

HAHA!

LANDRY

What is something I always say to you?

I wuv you.

What makes Mommy happy?

When I pick you a flower.

How do I make you laugh?

Say funny things and tickle me. And read me Book with No Pictures.

What do you enjoy doing with me?

Drawing pictures and painting toes.

What is my favorite thing to do?

Kiss me and draw pictures.

EMERSYN

What is something I always say to you?

"Be nice to your sister and brother!"

What makes Mommy happy?

When I give you warm hugs in the morning.

She always always always walks up to me and hugs me for a minute before she actually wakes up. It's the cutest.

How do I make you laugh?

Saying funny things like "boo boo butt!" {See Landry's}

What do you enjoy doing with me?

Hanging out with you and snuggling.

What is my favorite thing to do?

Talk with your Aggies and have slumber parties with me.

RADLEY

What is something I always say to you?

I love you and I will always be there for you.

What makes Mommy happy?

Getting to sleep in!

How do I make you laugh?

Making funny faces on the phone and talking in funny voices.

What do you enjoy doing with me?

Reading Harry Potter

What is my favorite thing to do?

Getting to spend time with your family and relax.

(Ummm...not sure if those go together, buddy! HA!)

Radley was so cute and kept trying to prompt the girls to say things that would make ME happy. I kept telling him that they could say whatever they wanted, but I am glad that there wasn't anything surprising. HAHA! Thanks for a fantastic link-up!

Show and Tell: Personal Style

I am loving these Show and Tell topics from Andrea, although I have a feeling y'all may be a tad disappointed by what I contribute today because my personal style is pretty vanilla. I also think that it's ironic that I am typing this post from the Hilton NYC FASHION DISTRICT Hotel. HA! Seriously perfect!

#ifonlyIwasafashionblogger

If I'm honest (and we have established many, many times, that I am) - I feel like I am truly just now coming into my style. I feel better than I ever did in my early 20s when I was supposed to be feeling all wonderful and skinny and fit. But I felt out of place and like I didn't belong. My late 20s/early 30s had me preggers and I while I LOVE LOVE LOVED being pregnant, I still felt like I wasn't measuring up. To what, I have no idea.

But now? Well, now I own it. Every bit of my flaws. Every bit of my imperfections. Every bit of me. I think these two tiny chicks **may** have something to do with it.

They have no lack of confidence whatsoever and I pray that's how they always feel. More than anything I want them to know that beauty is measured way beyond what they wear or how they look but how they make OTHERS feel. And I want my darling son to know that women are measured by more than their looks, too. When we got our family pictures back this summer, I had never felt more beautiful than this photo...

Standing by the man that loves me. All of me. And that's what makes me feel beautiful.

I think that your personal style should make you feel good, and strong and confident and beautiful and smart. And more than you ever imagined. And I am happy to say that I feel good almost every day... that doesn't mean I'm the most stylish, but I like what I wear and I feel good in my skin.

So let's take a look...

Fall:

Fall means the start of school and what else? FOOTBALL season. That means lots of maroon but I try to mix it up from just maroon t-shirts. This was me in my best "SB" mode. Ice coffee, sunnies, skinnies and wedges.

Saturdays at Kyle Field are some of my favorites ever. My fall game-day style is skinnies, tunics and sandals. (Well, that's basically my everyday style.)

When the weather finally starts to let some crispness in the air, my go-to is oversized sweaters, skinny jeans/leggings, and booties.

I think I wore this outfit once a week.

And then there are the ponchos.  ALL the ponchos. Give me every single one.

And some for the girls.

This fall I got a bit brave thanks to my girl, Shelly. I would text her a picture every morning if I didn't think it would drive her crazy. She inspired me to be brave in my outfit choices, try something new and most of all, do what makes me feel good.

This outfit was one of my favorites of the season - and I NEVER ever would have paired them together if it wasn't for her.

I also paired my most favorite basic black dress from Old Navy with a striped sweater after seeing her do the same.

Winter:

So it's winter here for like one day. As such, I wore it all that one day. I *MAY* have gone overboard, but well... I think Anthropologie totally would support this layering.

As the weather gets warmer (you know, the next day) it's long layers, cuffed jeans, booties...

Spring:

Spring means skirts...

three day curls and statement necklaces.

I've had this skirt since Ryan and I were engaged and I still love it as much as I did the day I bought it.

Summer:

Perhaps my favorite season of style... the one that lets me wear yoga pants and tanks every single day.

I wish I made the time to work out all year like I do in the summer. Maybe this is the year that I start a habit that sticks.

What's your favorite style season?
