Dear 30 year old me,

Dear 30 year old me,

In exactly 30 days you will be 40 years old. When Dad turned 40, the entire store of JCP was turned into a graveyard. The "marketing ladies" made tombstones, his office was filled with black balloons, and I think black crepe paper was just about everywhere in the break room.

Needless to say, we thought 40 was "near death" old.

I have other ideas about this milestone age now. But today isn't about nearly 40 year-old us... it's about 30 year-old you and a few things that helped us survive and maybe a few things I wish I would have known... but before we get to that, let's look at us at 30...

I specifically chose this picture because know that it's one of 4 times that you will look this good for the next 10 years. HA! (Shout out to professional hair and makeup for Niki's wedding!)

Life isn't going to be exactly what you planned and that's ok.
Not one single bit of your life can be orchestrated solely by you. It's impossible... and that's what makes it so beautiful. We can get all the degrees we want, pick out the perfect house, say yes to our dream job, and even decide how many kids we want. But we actually control zero parts of what happens to us - and that's life. Every disaster, every success, every challenge, every easy day, every obstacle and every milestone... there's beauty in each piece of our individual puzzles.

No one has a better life than you do, different? Maybe. But not better.
(Spoiler alert: this is still something we're gonna be working on at 40) Say this to yourself every time you get a case of the greens - you know, jealousy? We all have different stories to tell, and life would be so sad if you missed out on telling yours because you were so wrapped in someone else's. Don't fall for the lie of social media - we all show the highlight reels... but the good stuff, the REAL stuff is important, too. Sometimes it's hard to watch other people do things that you aren't doing and not feel like a "failure." But, there's a strong possibility that those same people are looking at you and wanting a little slice of your life, too.

Get in a selfish routine.
Sounds weird, right? Don't get me wrong, doing for others is awesome, but making time for yourself is important, too. When you pour into yourself (by reading, relaxing, sleeping, eating well, exercising) then you have a lot more to give to those around you.

It's okay to ask for help.
Asking for help doesn't make you weak - it makes you smart. "It" really does take a village. Raising children, owning pets, working, going to school... even being married takes more than 2 people sometimes. Ask your village for support - they will never let you down.

Cheer on your friends.
Be excited about the success of your friends - even when you aren't accomplishing big things. Remember that "no one's life is BETTER... just different" lesson? It applies here. Be on the front row, cheer the loudest, support their dreams, buy their products, like their pictures, comment on their blog posts, share their story... CHEER THEM ON!

Recognize the power of no.
Girl. JUST SAY NO. You don't have to be everything to everybody every single day. Those two little letters hold a powerful punch. And by saying "no" more ... you give strength to your "yes!". Sounds weird, but it's true. People will come to realize that your YES means you are committed because you don't give them away so easily. Let's practice, real quick: "Sorry, I can't commit to that right now." ... "I know that I've done this before, but this just isn't my best yes." [Thank you, Lysa T.] ... "It's a no from me." ... "My talents are better suited else where." ... "I've already committed my time other places."

Girlfriends are one of your greatest gifts.
You are going to meet new people throughout your life. Be grateful for the individual role that each woman plays in shaping who you are. Your work friends, your best-friends, your new friends, your old friends... they all have a piece of you and you need every single one of them. Savor that time, appreciate that kinship and foster every single one of those relationships. You will laugh and cry and cheer and scheme. You will solve each other's problems. Your girlfriends are one of this decade's greatest blessings.

Everything doesn't have to happen now.
Believe it or not, you don't have to drive a fancy car, go on exotic vacations, build a dream home, cook lavish meals and also have a six-pack. (Which is great, because, spoiler alert, 10 years later and you still haven't checked off any of those items). AND THAT IS OKAY! We (hopefully) get to live on this earth for a long time... enjoy the season of life you are in without worrying about all the things you haven't done.

Your spouse/partner is not actually trying to drive you crazy.
It may feel like it, but they're not. :)

Your children's favorite toys will be blocks/legos, cars, dolls, books and dress up clothes.
Don't waste money on the "latest and greatest" fad. They always come back to those five things. The money we would have saved??? We could have gone to Italy and back 15 times by now!

No one has it together.
Yep. We are all a bunch of big fat fakers. All of us are worried we aren't doing something right, we're messing up our kids, we aren't giving our all at work, we could be better partners... the list goes on. The truth is we are all doing the best we can, and that's all we should expect.

Choose your joy.
By now, you are a broken record at telling the kids "choose your attitude"... sometimes we could use those same words of wisdom. As Ms. Hawkins ended 95% of her announcements in Jr. High... "Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it." There is so much power in our choices to choose joy, happiness, gratefulness... in those moments that have you stressed, worried, angry... choose joy instead.

Seek Him first.
Most important piece of advice in this list. Seek Him first. Seek Him always. There is nothing that we can do to ever lose the love of Christ. You are going to walk through stress, disappointment, anger, fear, joy.... give it all back to Him. The beauty of Christ is that we are never alone... we never have to solve on single problem alone. He is there for all the big and small and hard. Seek Him first.

In closing, you are going to love your thirties. There is such a gentle gift in aging. You begin to focus on the important things, you hold on to the dear things and you let things that don't matter fade. And you finally FINALLY figure out your best hair. Savor every single second of this decade. The best really is yet to come...

Love,
Your older, wiser (and honestly better looking) self.

Rosin up that bow...

Growing up in Robinson, there was no question whether or not I would be part of the band. Everyone was in band - it's what we did - so as Radley approached 5th grade, I was interested to see what he would pick for his elective. They have the choice between art/music/theater (one each semester) or orchestra.

He picked orchestra and I was THRILLED. Some of my greatest childhood memories live in that band hall and while his journey doesn't ever have to resemble mine or Ryan's, I'm glad that he will have a year of experiencing the journey of learning music with a cohort of friends!

He had his first orchestra concert and we were all eager to watch him show off his new skills.

I tried to be chill and not take too many pictures, but clearly...

He also tried to ignore us and not smile our way, but clearly....

The concert lasted 15 minutes as they showed off their newfound skills and all of those kids were nothing but smiles as we made our way out of the auditorium to sing our praises.

As usual, we showed up big for those 15 minutes - I hope all my kids recognize how lucky they are to be loved so much.

Sidenote: Ryan was home super sick and had to miss the big performance. PTL for videos!

My favorite part of the evening happened as we were walking out to go to dinner; Radley spotted his principal and wanted to say hello...

Rad: Hi, Mr. Symank
Mr. S: Hi Radley, great job...
Rad: Thank you...
Mr. S: Were you nervous?
Rad: A little...
Mr. S: Good - that means you care.

I just love that. "Good - it means you care."

One more thing checked off that "kids refuse to quit growing up" bucket list. I look at him and can't get over how big he is which is ironic, because this kid has lived BIG since day one. Big love, big laugh, big emotions, big joy, big nerves.... and yet here I am just wishing he could stay little.

But honestly, I am grateful for the big he brings to every moment of our lives. I'm grateful for what we get to share as he gets big... and I can't wait for all the BIG things he'll keep teaching me along the way.

Time marches on...

You know what I don't love about clichés? They are mostly always right.

Examples:

Actions speak louder than words. True. My children tell me allllll the time, "I love you, Mommy" but then manage to lose every other sock, all the hair ties, and a hair brush every single morning. They do not love me. They want me to go insane.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. True. I am basically my mom. Which for 97.65% of the time is a GREAT thing.... but then I have these moments of, "Dear lord... I am just like my mother." (Love you!) And then I have these moments of "Dear lord...THEY (my children) are just.like.me." Mother Mary, pray for us.

The writing is on the wall. True. Because I literally found writing on the girls wall in their closet because "it's a classroom, mommy." See #1.

Which leads me to the title of this post because....

Y'all.

Time.Marches.On.

Like it never stops. Ever. Even when you are BEGGING it to just give you an extra second or hour or 15 years because your first born child is about to have lived for an entire DECADE. Since time refuses to listen to my pleas, I try to steal every moment I can with this kid. The girls had requested to spend an extra night in Waco a few weeks ago, so I got him all to myself. We ran some errands and then grabbed some ice cream and chatted about how HE feels about turning 10 which turned into a little impromptu goal setting...

I love that his list included everything from finding a shark tooth to getting more involved at church. I mostly love that he still enjoys sitting down with me and will talk about any and everything. Time can keep marching on, because I really can't wait to see what this big ol' kid of mine is going to keep on doing.

Also note that he wants to run a triathlon with Ryan. Let's see if you really can teach an old dog new tricks.

Emmy Richie Rich...

We had a big item to check off the to do list on Monday that took Emersyn (and Clarabell) to the bank. We decided that when the kids turn seven we would officially open their savings account and Emmy could not wait! She had been asking about the big day for weeks and finally the day arrived!

She was clearly ready.

I'm pretty sure her favorite part was all the peppermints she got to eat while she waited for the paperwork to be signed. She also thought she was hot stuff because she knew Mr. Joel.

As we were finishing up all the paperwork she asked me if this meant she was rich. I told her that I wish that was true but she ignored me and wanted us to call her Emmy Richie Rich.

She also wanted to know what the plan was to keep adding money (ehm, I told her she needed to ask Gigi and Pops.)

I love these milestones because it eases them into growing up. It shows them that we are there for every big and little step as they start to discover what's next and hopefully they'll keep inviting us along to watch!

40th Anniversary Surprise...

I can't wait to share this EPIC party with y'all mainly because we hosted this event before I started to blog. So this is some never before seen footage, y'all.

And the two stars happen to be the best parents around. Waaaaaayyy back in 2009 they were approaching a milestone anniversary and my brothers and our significant others really wanted to commemorate the occasion. I mean, mainly me, but they are all good sports and played along and paid the bills. ;) We have the most adorable outdoor theater in Bryan that made the best venue and created a theme for us that was easy to follow.

We sent out tickets as invitations (lots of options here), catered in "movie theater food", served drinks and made a 20 minute movie about their love story. We invited friends and family, surprise guests flew in, and my uncle even drove my MaMaw from Baton Rouge. Keeping the secret was the easy part... getting them there was a different story.

We told them that we wanted to take them to dinner to celebrate which was pretty normal. The event wasn't formal, but it also wasn't super casual and we kept dropping hints that maybe my dad should change clothes. He couldn't understand why and we didn't want to press the issue and give anything away. We fixed Mom's hair and make-up and drove to the restaurant.

And wouldn't you know... Ryan forgot to make the reservation. (The restaurant was in on the surprise... because I think ahead). So, we staged a small little annoyed wife/apologetic husband scene and decided to walk around downtown while we waited for our seats. I started texting people to get into place and we walked up to the theater and pointed at the marquee as everyone yelled "SURPRISE!!!"

I mean, how cute is my mom's big smile??

Men.

;)

Our dear friends made this awesome cake, we had custom popcorn holders (no pics, sorry), hot dogs, nachos, candy and drinks.

The best part was watching everyone shower them with love.

I mean - can you even with Radley and Ryan?

Owen is now taller than me.

Lifelong neighbors...

tennis friends...

besties...

so many people took time to come celebrate!

The Guercio kids said a few words and toasted the bride and groom...

and then we all enjoyed a movie highlighting their courtship, wedding, early years, middle years and now... we had the best time putting it all together!

The Guercio crew showed up strong...

this was a recreation of another picture...

MaMaw was of course front and center...

and a little throwback to just us 5.

And of course the Guley Girls!

This is easily the best party I've thrown because so many people wanted to just celebrate a milestone.

40 years is a long time to spend with one person and they are creeping up on FIFTY soon! Fifty years of saying yes, showing up, doing the hard, celebrating the easy, saying I'm sorry, working together, fighting, praying, loving, learning, through the good, the bad and the in betweens. We aren't promised easy but we do promise forever. Thanks for showing us that, Mom and Dad!

Italy sound good, Dad? I can help book the flights!

Fearlessly creative...

We dropped this girl off at Carolina Creek last Wednesday and she and I were both a ball of nerves. She just seems so much littler than Radley ever was and sane or not, it felt harder. Their personalities and self-assuredness are so different from one another and I wasn't quite sure that I was gonna make it. She on the other hand, well... as SOON as we got there, her excitement took over and she was ready for a week of fun with her fellow Giraffes!

It also helped that Anna was with her.
:)

She scored the top bunk and once she figured out how to climb up and jump down, she was good to go! Her brother was incredibly jealous because he ended up with a bottom bunk this year - ha!

One last little kiss goodbye and our girl was facing a major milestone! I was already counting down the days until we picked her up on Saturday!

Carolina Creek does an awesome job of posting pictures every night - Emmy did an awesome job of making sure her hair was well represented! :) (She's bottom right).

We did get to see her face on Jersey Thursday representing the Aggies of course!

That giant smile on her face put a giant calming in my heart. What a great big, strong, confident, brave kid we have in her. She had been so nervous and we had prayed for two weeks about filling her heart with courage and seeking Him in fear - and those prayers were answered!

Each picture was a tiny glimpse into her big days of fun and I couldn't help but giggle each time we found a new picture of Emersyn. She was definitely in heaven - her hair was down and she managed to wear every article of clothing we sent with her (even the extras - including BLUE JEANS which is crazy.) Radley's first year of camp, I'm pretty sure he didn't even change clothes.

Saturday morning finally arrived and we were able to sneak a peek into their breakfast routine...

and watch them walk out of "The BEASTro" back to their cabins for awards.

She was so excited to see her Daddy - he had a District meeting during drop-off and wasn't able to hug her bye. She's used to not seeing him during the week at this point, but it never really gets easier. She couldn't jump in his arms fast enough!

Twins. For real.

Each child is given a biblical characteristic that they exhibited that week and it was no surprise that Emersyn was recognized for her creativity. Our girl creates new games and activities all day, every day. She is a teacher/chef/mom/worker girl (that's someone that builds things)/sister at all times. She is such a light and I love that they recognized this gift in her.

Ephesians 2:10
For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Listening to each gift these girls were recognized with was another answered prayer - we pray that our children are surrounded by people that build them up and set positive examples and that is exactly what this week sounded like.

I think they also had a **tiny** bit of fun, too!

She's already started her letters to Miss Tabby and Miss Kellie - complete with some drawings of course.

We headed to the Ark for one last worship time and she insisted on walking with them.

CCCC did it again and posted closing day pics on Sunday - check out my sweet girl and her friends singing their praise for Jesus. I love this!

Radley managed to make his way down to his counselors for this part of the program - we could seriously leave him there all summer.

So glad these two had such a great week!

And so so so glad this crew was reunited!!

This isn't goodbye, though, something tells me we will be seeing this place for years to come.
